Going Home!!!

God is SO good! I have been praying that by some MIRACLE I'd be able to go home early, but I wasn't getting my hopes up. Things out here in Washington have been hectic.

However, yesterday, I was at lunch with my boss and she mentioned to me that she had hoped to send me home early and that she knew I really missed my family (although everyone here does). Excited at the possibility, I didn't want to get my hopes up too much. Things here have been hectic and I wasn't sure how I'd be needed within the next week. However, yesterday afternoon I got a call and was told that I could go ahead and make reservations to go home... AND NOT HAVE TO COME BACK!!!!

I fly out tomorrow morning and I'm SOOOOOOO EXCITED!

Natalie has been doing new things by leaps and bounds since I've been gone (as I've found out by catching up on the phone). Her pronounciation has improved and a few days ago she went for a walk with Jody and pushed her baby doll in a stroller up and down the street. She's also eating new things and started nodding for "yes". *sigh* What two and a half weeks can do in the life of an 18 month old!

What I've Been Up To

A friend recently asked me what my days have been like since I've been gone. I thought I'd post here as I haven't said a peep in a few weeks. (You might see why when you see eHere's my response:

The days here are all the same. Get up, eat breakfast at the hotel, go to the office from about 8-11:30, go out to lunch, work from about 1-5ish, go out to eat, work/veg at the hotel, feel very pregnant and swollen, notice my cankles, take a shower, go to bed. Every. single. day.

If I'm being positive, I haven't had to clean up after myself for three weeks and I've had some time to go shopping without an impatient 18 month old along for the ride. I've also gotten to eat lots of good food and I've had time to work out (although so far I've only done that once =o). But I'm really ready to see my family again. I REALLY want to go home.

One more week. While only a third of my stay out here, seems like a lifetime.

Mr. Mom here...

Well as you may know, Lauren is in Washington state for several weeks and I'm here at home with the one and only Natterbug. We've been having quite the time and have had ups and downs and all arounds. We've been clowning around in the kitchen for a bit tonight while I work on balancing a helium balloon with just enough weight to make it hover, while Natalie busied herself in her bathtub without the bath. She finds it makes a great reading chair.....

I can't help but laugh at this picture. They haven't invented pictures with audio but if they had you'd also hear her babbling on endlessly as she's reading. She's reading Curious George goes from 1 to 10 and back again, and I think she's "counting" :)

Anyhow, time to put this munchkin to bed.

And the Verdict is in....

IT'S A BOY!!! (and you should have seen Kevin jumping up and down in the sonogram room). I'm thrilled but TOTALLY unsure of what to DO with a boy. Having grown up with only a sister, "girls" are all I know. I mean, the whole diaper changing bit with a boy??? I'm sure I'll figure it out soon!

Where I'll Be

I board a plane tomorrow at noon to head out to Tacoma, Washington for almost THREE AND A HALF WEEKS! It pains me to be gone from the family for so long, but it's one of the not-so-frequent demands of my job and it will probably go pretty fast as I'll be working non-stop while I'll be there.
Since I'm pregnant and so into food right now, I've been glued to this show and found out they just did a taping at a restaurant in Tacoma that I'm DEFINITELY checking out while I'm there. Yeah food!

18 Months

Happy Half Birthday, little girl! You are SUCH a light in my life and make me smile EVERY SINGLE DAY. I love you.

20 Weeks

The belly is GROWING!

I LOVE Spring!

I'm not sure what's up with the weather, but last week it was in the teens and this past weekend it was in the 70's. Hello, allergies! We took advantage of the warm weather and got out to the park as a family for the first time this year. There were lots of other kids at the park, but Natalie didn't seem to be phased. Kevin and I had fun laughing at an 8 year old and 6 year old boy playing "kill the [imaginary] princess". Then they were "off to another dimension". Seriously, when do we stop dreaming up stuff like this???

I'm thinking if kids are night-and-day different from one to the next that our next kid will be clingy and shy. Natalie is DEFINITELY no wallflower.

Snow Day

Monday we had a blizzard by Maryland approximations: 5 inches. Everything was closed and Kevin and I stayed bundled up in the house. It reminded me of some great Midwestern snows that I enjoyed growing up - the BEST! Nice powdery snow makes playing outside SO much fun.

But, Natalie doesn't much enjoy the snow. It's wet and cold and she is NOT interested in being pulled around in a sled AT ALL!

Not sure if you can tell, but she's not happy at all. In fact, I think she's mad!

We tried tasting the snow - and that was DEFINITELY out!

She was happiest when she was being held or under the cover of the garage.

This was only smile outside. Seriously. It's a wonder I caught it!

And it's time to go in. That's all folks!

Stay Tuned!

My husband has decided that he absolutely HAS TO KNOW if we're having a boy or a girl this time around so I've caved and we WILL be finding out at our next sonogram. Our sonogram is next Tuesday, March 10th (Natalie's 18 month birthday).

We've had a friend of ours predict what we're having. This might not be so interesting, save for the fact that she's been correct on guessing other people's offspring 11 out of 11 times. She says she has a dream or a "feeling" or what not. While I'm a little skeptical, who am I to judge? I mean it IS a good record - and she IS a good friend of mine. She has predicted we're having another girl. But Kevin is absolutely CONVINCED it's a boy. Now I have always thought "girl", but I was never sure if it was a desire for Natalie to have a sister or one of those maternal "gut feelings". So who's right this time? You'll just have to stay tuned!

Yum.... FOOD!

So lately I've been all about food. I'm really obsessed. I realized last night that the problem is that pregnancy causes me to rarely (if ever) feel "full". Normally I can eat a reasonable amount of food and be done. But lately I've had a bottomless pit of a stomach and while it makes for some adventures in the kitchen, it has not boded well for my relationship with my bathroom scale.

Prepare yourself for the wailing that will emanate from my doctors office tomorrow when I go for my 20 week visit.

We've been eating-in a lot for dinners lately - simply because its cheaper to eat something fancy at home, I'm a shopaholic when it comes to groceries and Natalie is completely a loose canon when we go out to eat. You never know HOW it's going to go if she's along at a restaurant. (Usually we end up shoving food in our face for fear an explosion of boredom and/or tired crankiness is impending.)

So tonight I'm experimenting with a new recipe (my favorite thing to do these days). I ended up buying more ricotta than I needed at the grocery store the other day (surprise, surprise) and, not being a fan of wasting food, I found this recipe that should use it up nicely. My plan is to use some of the ground venison we have thawing in the fridge to make these, a recipe I've tried before and really enjoy. And I'll be using up the rest of the super easy/good marinara sauce I made on Friday. Paired with the loaf of Italian bread I've got on top of the fridge, this should be a good blizzard meal that will *hopefully* fill me up and keep me from having to unearth the car from 5 inches of snow to run to the store.

I know, I know, I hear all of you from Missouri (and other WAY cooler states that actually get decent winters) saying, "5 inches? Pshawwww! That's NOTHING!". And, not so secretly, I'm extremely jealous.

My Lil Chef

So recently I've been letting Natalie "cook" in the kitchen with me. Mostly that constitutes of letting her stand on a chair at the counter with me while I make dinner. Occasionally (if I'm brave) I let her stir something in a bowl and push buttons on the microwave. She really seems to enjoy being a part of the action and it helps me get through making dinner without a lot of complaining and whining from a bored and hungry 18 month old.

I'd mentioned this to my mom and she commented how cute that was but we didn't talk about it much more. So, it was much to my surprise this past weekend when I got a package in the mail with matching aprons for both Natalie and me that my mom had made herself! It really touched me and I almost found myself in tears. Thanks, Mom. I really appreciate all of your hard work!

Update

So, you may have noticed that I posted "potty" pictures last week of the new potty seat we had - and then promptly took them down. Kevin thought it probably was best NOT to have pics of Natalie breaking in the new seat on the web as there's plenty of sicko's in the world. Ahhh... but the picture of her carrying the little bucket around with her bare bum was SO cute. Oh well....

The whole potty training thing is not really an effort that we're pushing - yet. We're really just introducing the chair and talking about it more. Not sure she really gets the whole purpose of the toilet since I just had to go disinfect her from head to toe because she was splashing around in the upstairs toilet not 10 minutes ago. Hmmm... what part of "dirty" doesn't she get??? =)

In a few weeks I'll be heading out west to Washington State for work...FOR THREE WEEKS. I'm not very thrilled about being away from the family for so long, and Kevin is even LESS thrilled about working full-time and watching Natalie on his own. It will be a challenge for all of us. I'm already ready for it to be over and done with, but I'm just keeping in mind that this job has enabled me to be around a LOT more for my family than my previous job. And for three weeks of travel a year, it's worth it.

I've been on a cooking streak recently - trying new recipes, etc. I found the BEST recipe (from a girl at MOPS) for making my own tomato sauce. It's posted below. I made it and was able to make a couple pans of ziti from it and freeze the ones we didn't eat. Makes it nice for nights I don't want to cook.

Tonight we're having deer tenderloin (we have about 90lbs of deer in our freezer right now... and let me tell you it's been REALLY good) that will taste like filet mignon. The deer has been SO tender. We're also having broccoli cheese cornbread (which I've never made) and salad. I've been working on finding a recipe for yummy yeast rolls, so if you have any ideas, send them my way.

Last night I made pizza from scratch (a greek pizza and two pepperoni pizzas) with this dough. Super good and super easy since I used my bread machine on the "dough" cycle.

Oh, and I've recently fallen in love with THIS recipe. Except I grill the chicken, add grilled mushrooms, add cumin and saute my onions with some garlic. I also only use 1 1/2 chicken breasts. This is SO good.

Well, I could ramble on and on, but I probably ought to go rescue my kid from the certain peril she's getting herself into!

Super GOOD Marinara Sauce
2 28oz Cans whole peeled tomatoes
2 28oz Cans Crushed tomatoes (or you can use whole peeled)
FRESH basil (one big handful)
1/4 c Olive oil (it calls for regular, not EVOO, but EVOO is all I've ever used)
Salt and pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients in a pot and let simmer for 45 minutes to an hour.

Did you know you can get an institutional-sized can of whole-peeled tomatoes at Costco for around $2.87? That's a great deal! You'll just need to size the recipe appropriately.

Thank you, Jamie!

Thank you, Jamie, for the super cute outfit!

Valentines Meme...A week Late

So for Valentine's Day last week, Kevin took me to Ruth's Chris. We'd never been and I was a little concerned that it wasn't going to be my thing (I'm not much of a red meat craver). But, I was totally blown away by how good it was and loved every bit. Afterward we went to Dairy Queen and got sundaes. Do I have a good guy or WHAT?

This picture is just before we went to dinner last Friday night. Why do I always look tired in pictures these days??

So, I found this meme on the web and thought it was appropriate for the whole Valentine's post - even if it IS a week late. Kevin, I'd be interested if you'd fill this out in the comments so I could hear YOUR take on some of these questions!

What are your middle names?
Allison/Andrew

How long have you been together?
6.5 years

How long did you know each other before you started dating?
Hmmm...2.5 months?

Who asked who out?
I asked the question "did you ever wonder what it would have been like if we would have started dating?" after we'd been spending lots of "friend time" together. And then the next week he told me he loved me. Hey... when you know, you know.

Whose siblings do you see the most?
His, but it's really about a tie.

Do you have any children together?
Yes, one here and one in heaven.

What about pets?
Yes, a cat that he claimed ownership as soon as we started dating and that I've tried in vain to pawn off. She's a sweet cat, but we've had our moments. I don't think we'll have anymore when she kicks the bucket.

Did you go to the same school?
No.

Who is the most sensitive?
Me. But he can definitely show a softer side.

Where do you eat out most as a couple?
All over the place, but I'd have to say Fuji Sushi gets the most visits from us out of any ONE place (although not in a while).

Where is the furthest you two have traveled together as a couple?
Whistler, BC. I miss skiing.

Who has the craziest exes?
Hmmm...I have more exes than he does, but I think he wins in the "Craziest" category.

Who has the worst temper?
We're about tied. I think we've gotten better than when we were first married, though.

Who does the cooking?
Both of us, but me on a regular basis.

Who is more social?
Me. He has close friends from high school and sees them only so often. I am meeting new people all the time.

Who is the neat freak?
I didn't start out that way, but I've slowly become pretty anal about socks on the floor, etc.

Who is the most stubborn?
Ummm.. I plead the 5th!

Who hogs the bed?
Definitely him. He thinks that he can sleep in the middle and give the cat a third of the bed. We sleep in a queen-size!

Who wakes up earlier?
Definitely me.

Where was your first date?
Arctic Circle. I thought that it was a joke when he said we were going there (all I could think of was "The North Pole"). It's a dive of an ice cream stand but it has absolutely the BEST soft-serve chocolate dipped cone that you've ever eaten in your WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE!

Who has the bigger family?
Him. He has far more extended family than I do. We both only have one sibling though.

Do you get flowers often?
Nope, although I got them TWICE Valentine's week. Gerbera daisies too. I am a well-loved woman!

How long did it take to get serious?
Refer to the "who asked who on a date first" question.

Who eats more?
Right now I do. Being prego has me hungry ALL THE TIME!

Who sings better?
Definitely him. I embarrass myself when I'm alone in the car.

Who does the laundry?
It's all me, baby.

Who’s better with the computer?
We both have our strengths when it comes to the computer, but, by a landslide, it's him. Hey, living with the IT guy has its perks.

Who drives when you are together?
Him.

Who picks where you go to dinner?
We always over-analyze this one together. We did BEFORE we had kids and we could go anywhere at any time and we do now when we get on average one date a month. When it comes to food, we don't mess around.

Who is the first one to admit when they’re wrong?
It seems like I'm always the one apologizing and giving in. He'd probably disagree. But I'm right. He just won't admit it. :)

Who wears the pants in the relationship?
I'd say him, but I knew I couldn't marry a wishy washy guy because I'd railroad him. Kevin is anything but wishy washy, so I'd say we're fighting over the pants most of the time. I've got one leg in one side and he in the other. The whole submitting to one another thing is something we're still trying to master.

Who has more tattoos?
No tattoos on either of us. I wanted one on my foot when I was single, but I didn't do it. And then I wanted a nose stud when I was married, but Kevin said it would be over his dead body. I considered it.

Who eats more sweets?
Hands down, me. I'm bad.

Who cries more?
Me. No offense, but it would weird me out if he cried more than me. And I'm pregnant right now. Raging hormones... need I say more?

And We're Back...

So we're feeling better. And that's a good thing, considering the weekend is upon us. The last two weekends we've been sick - and it's been a whole lotta NO FUN.

It started out with Kevin while on training... And then it was Natalie... and then it was Lauren and then it was Kevin AGAIN. Uggg...

Here's a few snapshots from the last week...

Natalie while still in recovery... not sure if you can see the snot dripping out her nose. Makes for a nice picture, eh?

Last weekend Natalie and I had started feeling better. Here's a snapshot of us reaping the benefits of good antibiotics.

And finally, I couldn't resist. Heh Heh Heh... Monday night Kevin fell asleep reading a book while I was out at a MOPS meeting. Poor thing was as sick as a dog and had taken some Benadryl for his sniffles. Ahh...what a priceless picture!

"What's with the fishing hat?" you ask? I think his head was cold. =)

It's Snot Funny.

Death. That would probably describe the way I'm feeling right about now. This weekend Natalie was diagnosed with a double ear infection and was the biggest crank you've ever seen (but who can blame her?). Last week Kevin started fighting off a cold while in DC for training (he's still got remnants of it). And Saturday I started to get a sore throat.

I should have known.

This morning the doctor said that pregnancy is considered a weakened immune state. Hmmm... maybe that would explain the violent shivers and the constant fever and the snot that is draining out of my face faster than I can wipe it away.

All I have to say is thank the LORD for babysitters and husbands. Because I really would be dead if it weren't for both.

I think the really cruel curse for pregnant women is that they can't take any of the really GOOD drugs when they're sick. I mean, there's a reason I dont take Tylenol when I'm not pregnant...it SO isn't working.

Snow!

We had our first real snow yesterday and today. It actually stuck this time! I think its so obnoxious that everyone here is afraid of snow and doesn't like it. I absolutely LOVE snow and think its ridiculous that people are intimidated to go out of their houses here when there's an inch on the ground. Come ON people!

Natalie has never officially played in the snow until today. Unfortunately, the snow was really ice by the time we got to it so it wasn't much fun. Nat was all business as she was trying to focus on NOT falling down. Hmmm...hope she doesn't adopt the cranky-pants Maryland attitude about winter.

And here are some pictures from our yard....

I'm trying to take some photos that might make good black and whites for our wall in the living room. I had a thought to do 4 separate summer/winter/fall/spring close shots (in black and white) for our living room wall. We need something more "grown up" in there and I thought it would be neat to make the photos myself rather than buying posters at the store and framing them. Which one of these would you vote for?

15 Weeks... Almost

Ahh... the belly isnt quite as tight as it used to be. (Although I never had Denise Austin genes - that's for sure!) So, I've popped out a little faster this time than last.

I'm sure that not all of what you see here is baby though. The past couple weeks my appetite has gone through the roof. I'm now nearly eating the same portions as my husband *yikes* and also snacking between meals. When I daydream, it's about food. My current craving/obsession is a bowl of cream of crab soup from a place called The Open Door Cafe in Bel Air, MD. Three words: "TO DIE FOR". Or as my mother-in-law says... "to kill for". Hmmm... I always wonder WHO that person is that should be worried when her favorite food is up for grabs. Better stay on her good side!

Preggo Pictures Coming

I got out the maternity clothes this week and I'm showing a bit these days. I'm almost 15 weeks along (Tuesday).

Until I get Kevin up from his nap to take a picture, I thought I'd leave you with this momento of his little female look-alike...

I believe she'd put all 8 of the pacifiers we own in her mouth if she could manage it.
